On Being Refreshed

A generous person will prosper;
    whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.

-Proverbs 11:25 (NIV)

We often hear the saying, “You gotta take time for yourself.” It’s the world’s expression, and like many expressions of the world apart from God, it only contains a measure of the truth. The complete truth is that we take time refreshing ourselves in the Word of God, through personal time with God, to be filled with Him. We then are to take that filling of His love and truth to refresh others. When we take the time to pour out to others what has been poured into us, we will then be refreshed.

Are you exhausted, Beloved? Then take some time to answer the following:

  1. Am I spending daily time being refreshed in the Word of God?
  2. Am I then encouraging others through the hope God has poured into me?

If either of these are missing, then you will feel exhausted. God promises to renew our strength daily, morning by morning. We plug into that strength by spending daily quiet time with Him. Then we are equipped to be continually strengthened throughout the day by strengthening others through the message of truth, His Word. And the process continues throughout the day. When you feel spent again, take time away to pray, regain strength, then go out again and refresh others.

Some of you may be facing a long-term exhaustion. It may be time to re-evaluate your priorities. The only way to do this is to get before God and ask. He promises all His children in Christ this:

But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be provided for you. (Matthew 6:33)

Are you putting Him first in your life? If He’s not first, you may be discovering that the things you are putting first are only draining you. Only He can sustain you, Beloved. The world’s stuff will leave you empty and dry each and every time. But His love will refresh you and will never run dry.

I pray this encourages you, provides you with hope, and leads you to adjust your life to His work in and through you. Remember you were created to glorify Him in all you do. Make plans to get with Him, right away. Do not delay. Listen to what He is telling you. Then follow Him in whatever He says. You can trust He is always looking out for you and has your eternal best interests in mind. You are His precious child, and He loves you more than you can imagine.
