God’s Goodness in Creation

So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to come over the man, and he slept. God took one of his ribs and closed the flesh at that place. Then the Lord God made the rib He had taken from the man into a woman and brought her to the man. And the man said:

This one, at last, is bone of my bone
and flesh of my flesh;
this one will be called “woman,”
for she was taken from man.

-Genesis 2:21-23

After God created the earth and filled it with life, “God saw all that He had made, and it was very good” (Gen. 1:31). When God recognized, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper as his complement” (Gen. 2:18), He allowed Adam to name all the creatures He had created. Each creature was identified by Adam as he studied them and named them. I believe one of the reasons God allowed Adam to name all the animals is so Adam could recognize there was none suitable for him as a compliment (v. 20). God was about to show Adam an amazing gift that could only be the one perfectly matched for him–woman.

God displays His amazing work of surgery and fashioning in creating Eve from Adam’s rib. And when God brought Eve to Adam, he was overjoyed and praised God for Eve! The first words Eve ever heard was her husband’s adornment of her to God. Eve completed God’s creation. To God, He saved the best of all His creation for last.

Both man and woman are a special work of God, the only ones created in God’s own image (Gen. 1:26-27). They are created both specially and uniquely. They have both been given the gift of a personal and intimate relationship with God, which no other creature in God’s creation is given. We see the awesomeness of God in creating Adam from dust, but we see the gentle fashioning of God in creating Eve from Adam.

All of this happened before sin entered the world in Genesis 3. When we want a picture of the way the world was originally intended, we go back to Genesis 1 and 2. That was God’s plan–perfect, face-to-face fellowship with man and woman in the garden, provision of food and the gift of fruitful, purposeful work, and the complete union and relationship of man and wife with no shame. That is God’s creation; that is God’s character, for God is truly good.

We know the world is not that way now. But it won’t always be like this. At God’s perfect time, He will restore all of creation back to its original state in the garden. Man and woman, created in His own image, will walk face-to-face with Him in Paradise. What God began He is faithful to carry to completion. He is the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end (Rev. 22:13).

We must not miss the opportunity while we are still here to get our lives right with God. We want to be assured we are with Him again in the end. How can we know? Through faith in the cross of Jesus Christ. The world has been plunged into sin since Genesis 3. But God sent His Son Jesus to be the Savior of the World. He took all our sins to the cross so that we can be forgiven. We simply receive the gift of forgiveness at the cross and the promise of eternal life through Jesus’ rising from the dead. We agree with God, “Yes, I am a sinner and am in need of Jesus’ free gift of salvation! I believe Jesus died for my sins and rose from the dead. I want Jesus to be the Lord of my life, for He is the way, the truth, and the life.”

Do you want to be restored to God, both now and for eternity?
