As the Kingdom of God

Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God.

-1 Corinthians 2:12 (ESV)

When Jesus was with His disciples, He spent a lot of time teaching them the difference between the Kingdom of God and the world as we now live in it. While the kingdom of God is currently invisible, those who follow Jesus as their Lord and Savior belong to His kingdom right now. Jesus chose us out of the world, even though we still live in the world. But we are not a part of the world–we are a part of God’s kingdom. We are to behave and act according to the kingdom we currently belong to, not according to the world we live in.

When we love others based on a choice, not based on the way they behave, we are living according to God’s kingdom. When we forgive and show mercy because we were shown mercy by Jesus, we are living according to God’s kingdom. When we turn away from taking vengeance upon someone who wronged us and give that responsibility to God instead, we are living according to God’s kingdom. We are behaving according to the kingdom we belong to, not the world we currently live in.

Beloved, this is how we are to think and behave. This world is passing away but the kingdom of God will endure forever. Things will not remain the way they are now. God promises He is doing a new thing, and it is springing up–do we not perceive it (Isaiah 43:19)? The world is changing rapidly. We are to live with the unchanging person of Jesus Christ always. We are to live according to God’s kingdom today.
