How Can We Know the Way?

“Lord,” Thomas said, “How can we know the way?”

Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

-John 14:5-6

I believe this is one of the most comforting passages in all of Scripture. Let’s take a look at the context. Jesus is facing the last hours of His life before going to the cross. He told His disciples what will happen–that He must suffer many things, die, and be raised on the third day. They are scared. They are worried. They don’t know what will happen next, and they don’t understand why it is all happening. They couldn’t see the other side of Jesus’ plan at this moment. They desperately needed comfort. They needed to know the way.

Before Thomas’ question, Jesus began by saying: “Your heart must not be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many dwelling places; if not, I would have told you. I am going away to prepare a place for you. If I go away and prepare a place for you, I will come back and receive you to Myself, so that where I am you may be also. You know the way to where I am going” (John 14:1-4).

It is at this point Thomas cries out, “Lord, how can we know the way?” Let’s pause for a moment and consider Thomas’ question. Have you ever been there? Have you ever wondered what the way is? Have you ever faced confusion and doubt, all the while thinking you have all these options, and yet, don’t feel the comfort that comes from having so many paths to choose?

We think that having lots of choices gives us freedom. But it really doesn’t. It just leaves us even more lost. We end up guessing and hoping we’ve taken the right path. We go by our gut. It just feels right, we say, so it must be right. But how many times has that lead us wrong?

I’ve come to learn the greatest freedom of living a life with Jesus–in any decision, there is only one right way. And here’s the thing–I have no idea what that one right way is. But Jesus knows, because He is the Way. He is the Truth. He is the Life. If I go His way, I will always be going the right way. If I go my way, I will always be going the wrong way. It really is that simple my friends. Like I said, it’s the greatest freedom I’ve ever known.

You may ask, Then how do you know what Jesus’ way is? Excellent question! I’m so glad you asked! I pray and I ask Him. Then I search the Bible and let Him place me in the pages of Scripture which reveal the truth. I have given up trying to rationalize it in my own thinking. I let Jesus do that for me. Does that make me a robot or foolish, like I can’t think for myself? Absolutely not! It makes me wise because I acknowledge that He is God and I am not. Jesus’ way is the smartest, most interesting, and most thought-provoking way imaginable. His ways are beyond our ways and His thoughts are beyond our thoughts. To think like Him is to think like God. That’s pretty smart, I’d say.

Do you want to know the way? Ask Jesus and He’ll tell you. He always speaks truth. And His ways will not be like yours. But if you trust Him, if you really let go and follow Him, I promise you one thing–you will not be disappointed.
