Psalm 121

(The Lord Our Protector)

I lift my eyes toward the mountains.
Where will my help come from?
My help comes from the Lord,
the Maker of heaven and earth.

He will not allow your foot to slip;
your Protector will not slumber.
Indeed, the Protector of Israel
does not slumber or sleep.

The Lord protects you;
the Lord is a shelter right by your side.
The sun will not strike you by day
or the moon by night.

The Lord will protect you from all harm;
He will protect your life.
The Lord will protect your coming and going
both now and forever.

When we are feeling fear, worry, or uncertainty about events to come, we should turn our anxious thoughts and attention to God our Protector. The psalmist uses the word “protector” six times in this passage to describe who God is and what He does. He protects us, because He is the Protector. We can trust in His great power and strength to keep us from harm and to keep us from the feelings we have which often don’t reveal the truth of the situation. Instead of allowing ourselves to dwell on these feelings, we should use that energy to dwell on God and His great kindness and compassion for us in our weakened conditions. We will feel uplifted and hopeful having simply made the decision to turn away from the anxiety and turn to God instead.

I love to memorize Scripture. It helps me when I am feeling anxious. I am going to take time today and memorize Psalm 121. Even if you can’t memorize the whole psalm today, memorize a verse or two and recite it often in your head as you go about your day. You will be flooded with peace and joy as you focus your attention on Almighty God instead of your concerns.

Have a blessed and wonderful weekend, friend. God loves you. He is your Protector!
