Work Only for the Lord

Whatever you do, do it enthusiastically, as something done for the Lord and not for men, knowing that you will receive the reward of an inheritance from the Lord. You serve the Lord Christ.

-Colossians 3:23-24

We have it in us to want to impress others. We want others to like us and to think we do a good job. We feel happy when others receive us and feel sad when they reject us. But when we live like this, we are really going down a bad path that will constantly leave us disappointed. Pleasing others should never be a part of how we live.

We are to work for an audience of One–God. Our goal should always be to please Him and not worry about what others think. People are too sinful and too short-sighted to ever appreciate or see the big picture of what we are doing. But God sees it all. If we make it our life’s goal to please Jesus, then we are making a good choice.

One day, each one of us will stand before the Lord Jesus Christ. If you are a believer, you will stand before Him in the Tribunal (Greek: bēma). Paul writes in 2 Cor. 5:10 to believers–“For we must all appear before the tribunal of Christ, so that each may be repaid for what he has done in the body, whether good or worthless.” This is a seat to judge whether we were obedient followers of Jesus Christ. And guess what? No one else will be there but you and Jesus. When it is all said and done, the Person who will hand out rewards is Him alone. If we truly lived with this in mind, we would never seek to please anyone else but Him.

It’s all about patience and waiting. Would you rather receive applause from people here on earth, which is temporary and really, very superficial, or would you rather receive a reward from the Lord Jesus Christ, which will last forever? Many times, our actions that please Christ will be repulsive to a sinful world. We cannot allow people’s opinions to shape how we act. We must look to Christ alone for His knowledge of us. He gives us everything we need to know in His Word. We can know here whether we are pleasing the Lord or not.

I don’t know about you, but I want to come skipping and bouncing into the Tribunal, knowing I followed Him with all my heart. Sure, He knows I will make mistakes and disobey, but I want to work out that here on earth with Him. I don’t want to wait for the Tribunal to work that out. I want the Tribunal to be an awesome time of praise, worship, and excitement as He and I talk over my life with Him here on earth. Like a child who did a good job all school year, going to the end-of-the-year meeting with her teacher, I want to be excited for the good report card I receive from Jesus. Don’t you?
