Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father.

-Matthew 10:29 (NIV 1984)

I praise God this morning that nothing happens in this world apart from His will. A tactic the enemy often uses is to lie and convince us there are senseless acts of violence or death. But this is not true. Nothing can fall to the ground apart from the will of the Father in heaven. Even if we cannot understand why, God always has His reasons, and we must trust in Him and hold onto that which is trustworthy and true.

I am taking this lesson personally this morning as I hit a squirrel with my car as I was driving the kids the school. Even the kids right away soothed me and comforted me with their kind words–“Mommy, it’s okay. You didn’t mean to do it.” I thanked God for a heart of compassion and caring for His creation, and asked Him to heal the sadness I felt for the squirrel. I also thanked Him that He was in control the entire time. Though I can’t understand why, I make a choice to trust in Him and walk by faith. That’s really all I can do, then move on with His plans for the day.

I think a part of spiritual maturity has to do with accepting feelings of discomfort in the unknown, but trusting in the hope of full understanding that will come one day. This is where our patience comes in. God promises that we will know fully in heaven. Here, we are to walk in faith and trust in Him, sight unseen. In this, we are blessed, and through His Holy Spirit, we can have peace, even through the unknowns of life. He is always near.
