God is Strength and Power

Horns of strengthThe Lord is my rock,
my fortress, and my deliverer,
my God, my mountain where I seek refuge,
my shield and the horn of my salvation,
my stronghold.

-Psalm 18:2

The use of the word “horn” in Scripture means “a symbol of power based on the strength of animal horns” (HCSB Study Bible). When David wrote Psalm 18, he referred to God’s strength as the “horn of my salvation.” In all the descriptive words he used in verse two, he was emphasizing the power of the Lord and the strength of our salvation in the Lord. It is a power that is unmatched by any other.

Fast forward to the scene in heaven in Revelation chapter five. In the apostle John’s vision, he said, “I saw One like a slaughtered lamb standing between the throne and the four living creatures and among the elders. He had seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent into all the earth” (Rev. 5:6). He saw Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God, slaughtered for our sins, yet powerful in might. The use of the number seven in Scripture symbolizes “perfection and completion.” Jesus Christ, though slaughtered like a Passover lamb, has perfect power (seven horns) and perfect wisdom and omniscience (seven spirits).

We worship a powerful and perfect God, and there is no one like Him. Meditating on the power and strength of God increases our faith and ability to rely completely on Him. He knows everything. He can do everything. Nothing is impossible for Him. Just like the strength of a ram’s horn, our Lord’s strength to defeat His enemies goes unmatched. Satan has no power over the Living God.

Are you facing a situation today which seems impossible? Do you feel powerless to do anything about it? Go to the Almighty God. He holds all the power to fight your battle for you. Rely on His strength through prayer and petition. Watch how He takes a seemingly impossible situation and makes it possible.
