Be strengthened by the Lord and by His vast strength.

-Ephesians 6:10

As a followers of Jesus Christ, you and I are facing a battle each and every day. There is an unseen spiritual battle going on around us that affects almost every aspect of our lives. The battle is between God and Satan, though Satan is really a lackey in comparison to our Great God. However, Satan is real and deceptive and cunning. In this part of Ephesians 6, Paul tells us what we must to do fight. We must put on the full armor of God. Let’s look at the text and discuss each piece of armor. Paul writes:

10 Finally, be strengthened by the Lord and by His vast strength. 11 Put on the full armor of God so that you can stand against the tactics of the Devil. 12 For our battle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the world powers of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavens. 13 This is why you must take up the full armor of God, so that you may be able to resist in the evil day, and having prepared everything, to take your stand. 14 Stand, therefore,

with truth like a belt around your waist,
righteousness like armor on your chest,
15 and your feet sandaled with readiness
for the gospel of peace.
16 In every situation take the shield of faith,
and with it you will be able to extinguish
all the flaming arrows of the evil one.
17 Take the helmet of salvation,
and the sword of the Spirit,
which is God’s word.

1. Know the truth.2. Live a holy life, turning away from evil and the traps of the world. Stand, therefore, with truth like a belt around your waist, righteousness like armor on your chest, (v. 14)
3. Always be ready to share the gospel. and your feet sandaled with readiness for the gospel of peace. (v. 15)
4. Have faith in every situation. In every situation take the shield of faith, and with it you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. (v. 16)
5. Know you are saved.6. Know God’s Word—memorize it and have it ready to defeat any lies the enemy tells you. Cf. Matt. 4:1-11 Take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is God’s word. (v. 17)

The battle begins the moment you wake up, and it lasts even throughout the night while you are sleeping. An unarmed Christian is no match for the traps of Satan. Just as a Roman solider, whom Paul was referencing when describing the armor of God, put on his armor each day, we also must put on our armor each day. We begin our day in God’s Word and in prayer, and we keep God’s Word close to our heart throughout the day, calling out to God in prayer as we go about our activities. It’s the only way to have spiritual victory. Though we will stumble at times, we will remain strong, because God has vast strength to help us in our time of need.

Go through each piece of armor. Is there a place where your armor is weak? Satan will find that place and attack fiercely. Ask God for His help to strengthen and protect you today. It takes time and effort, but there is nothing more important.
