Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed. If one person falls, the other can reach out and help. But someone who falls alone is in real trouble.

-Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 NLT

The writer of Ecclesiastes, Solomon, described many attributes of life as “futile” in his writings. However, friendship is one area of life he never called futile. Friendship is very important if we are going to carry through life successfully and joyfully. Therefore, it is crucial that we seek the Lord for godly friendship.

A godly friend will respect you and stand by you, carrying your burdens and speaking the truth to you in love. A godly friend will rejoice when you rejoice and mourn when you mourn. She will laugh with you, cry with you, pray with you, and share life’s concerns with you. A godly friend is a real treasure.

Jesus knew the importance of godly friendship. That is why He told His disciples to “love one another” as He was headed to the cross. We show ourselves belonging to the family of God when we love one another as Jesus loved us. This takes time, sacrifice, and a willingness to put others before ourselves in order to honor and glorify God. But the rewards of sacrifice for a friend far outweighs the efforts. Going through life with a good friend, watching one another grow in Christ, is a tremendous blessing indeed.

If God has blessed you with a godly friend, thank and praise Him today. Ask God to bless your friend and fill her life with His peace and joy. If you are looking for a godly friend, pray that God would bring the right person into your life. It takes time and effort to build and establish godly friendship, but you will be so glad you did.
