Therefore, since we also have such a large cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us lay aside every weight and the sin that so easily ensnares us. Let us run with endurance the race that lies before us, keeping our eyes on Jesus, the source and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that lay before Him endured a cross and despised the shame and has sat down at the right hand of God’s throne.

-Hebrews 12:1-2

Last summer I picked up an exercise routine from my past I believed was long dead and gone for my body–jogging. I had sustained a back injury for ten years and I believed my jogging days were over because of it. But God had a different plan. Through physical therapy for several months, I got to the source of sustained healing I needed–a deep stretching routine. Once I got that down, my back aches started to go away. Then the desire to jog came back to me, and through prayer, I gave it a try.

The first month was difficult. I had to jog for a little bit, then walk for a little bit. This went back and forth until I could finish the course I had set before me. But eventually, I could jog for longer lengths of the course. Then, I could jog the whole way and not have to stop and walk. Today, I go running a few days a week and love it. There is nothing like getting outside, feeling the fresh air, and the rush of a good exercise routine. I’m so glad I didn’t give up during those difficult days when I started. The reward of my jog and time in prayer with God is way more joyful than the pain I had to endure to get there.

What an awesome metaphor for our walk with God! Yes, there are many painful times–times which we wish we didn’t have to endure the trials. But there is a reward that awaits us if we keep going and don’t give up. There is a joy that lies before us in the end when we arrive home to our Beloved Jesus. And there are many rewards that await us along the road to heaven here on earth. We also have all the saints in heaven who have gone before us, cheering us on. You can do it! Don’t give up! It is so worth it in the end! And the beautiful truth is, we have our friend Jesus who went before us as well, and gives us all the strength and endurance we need through the Holy Spirit. We run, one day at a time, keeping our eyes on Him. He is faithful to help us stay the course, always.

If you’re discouraged, tired, or feeling weak today, don’t give up. The rewards of joy are right around the corner. Ask Jesus to pick you up and carry you today. You never have to run alone. He is with you, each step of the way, and His grace is sufficient for you, because His power is made perfect in your weakness.
