God’s Word is a Refuge and Protection

Open BibleEvery word of God is pure;
He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him.
Don’t add to His words,
or He will rebuke you, and you will be proved a liar. –Proverbs 30:5-6

When I read these verses in Proverbs, I feel both comfort and correction. God is indeed merciful and longsuffering, but He will always be proved right and true. My fallen human nature will try to add to God’s Word according to what I think is right or according to the way I see things. But God warns us, “There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death” (Prov. 14:12).

I need to stay close to God through His Word every day in order to avoid falling into the trap of going my own way. I need to pray and seek Him whenever I am faced with choices throughout the day to make sure I align my life with His will. I need to submit my thoughts to His thoughts. His paths will always lead to freedom, whereas my paths will always lead to trouble. In the long run, God will be proved right, and I will be proved a liar.

God has allowed this system for a reason–we are to seek Him and a relationship with Him above all else. God’s purpose and design for us was to walk in close fellowship with Him all our days, just as it was in the Garden of Eden before sin entered the world. He never intended for us to learn something, then go off on our own and try to practice it. He intended for us to walk with Him, as He walks beside us, in front of us, and behind us. We are created for relationship with God. He protects us by making sure freedom and joy only occur in close proximity to Jesus.

Jesus is right here for you. He wants you to enjoy His presence and obey His commands found only in the Bible. He knows it will lead to an abundant life. We are not meant to go our own way. Jesus is the Way, the Only Way. Anything else will lead us down the wrong and painful path.
