And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don’t know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words. And the Father who knows all hearts knows what the Spirit is saying, for the Spirit pleads for us believers in harmony with God’s own will.

Romans 8:26-27 NLT

Have you ever bowed your head to pray, not knowing what to say before you begin? Then suddenly, the words are given to you and you end up saying exactly what needs to be said? That is the work of the Holy Spirit, interceding on your behalf. It is a powerful, awesome experience. And the more time you spend in prayer, the more you get a chance to witness the glory of the Holy Spirit praying for you.

Prayer is our most powerful weapon against the forces of darkness that come against us. Hiding the Word of God in our hearts helps us pray according to God’s own will. We need both, and a great dose of both every single day. The more we grow in our spiritual walk with Christ, the more the enemy comes against us. We desperately need to cling to God in prayer and in the Word.

What spiritual battles are you fighting today? Bow your head in prayer. Just start praying, and the Holy Spirit will give you the words to speak. Notice closely where He leads you. Do you begin reciting a verse you hadn’t thought of? Then open your Bible afterward and read that verse. God is speaking to you through it to give you the tools to fight the spiritual battles of the day. Praise the Lord, for “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble” (Psalm 46:1 NIV84).
