Search me, God, and know my heart;
test me and know my concerns.
See if there is any offensive way in me;
lead me in the everlasting way.

Psalm 139:23-24

We often wonder why we have to go through the trials we go through. Deep down, we really want to go through life the easy way–no heartache, no pain, no loss, no testing. But God’s infinite knowledge and wisdom knows that is not the best for us. He sees the bigger picture we cannot see. He allows testing in our lives. He uses our marriages, children, families, co-workers, circumstances and even other believers to show where we are concerned and anxious. He already knows us perfectly. But we don’t always know what’s in us until we are put into a situation where the truth about us comes to the forefront. We are then in a place to bring ourselves and that unholy quality before God so He can work in us to make us holy.

The everlasting way is the path to freedom and peace. Our human hearts are frail, fragile, and full of qualities that displease God. Without knowing what’s inside us, we have no way to walk with God so that His Holy Spirit can work in us to overcome our anxious hearts. His testing allows us to see what He can see in us. No, it’s not pretty. Our sin is bone-deep and offensive to God. But His love for us is deeper. He cares so deeply that He orchestrates every moment of our lives to show us concerns so we can be led by Him in the everlasting way. We then praise His name, see more clearly His profound love for us, and walk in a new way of life.

It’s hard. The walk with Jesus is narrow and difficult. But keep pressing on. He not only walks beside us, but He walks in front of us, behind us, and carries us, all at the same time. And every day we are one day closer to our eternal, perfect state with Him.
