Why We Can Be Patient in Affliction

Rejoice in hope; be patient in affliction; be persistent in prayer.

Romans 12:12

Even when we are in the thick of affliction, we can rejoice in hope. There will come a day when God will rescue us from our affliction. In the meantime, as we continue to seek the Lord for help, a spiritually maturing person will ask, “Lord, what do you want me to learn from this?” The best and most fruitful lessons of our lives will be learned in the thick of affliction.

We can be sure God will not allow our trial to continue one moment longer than absolutely necessary to accomplish His perfect purposes in and through it. God wastes nothing. The moment He is finished with His work in that trial, it will be over and we will be rescued. God will accomplish it quickly in its time (Isa. 60:22).

Are you in the thick of affliction today? Rejoice in hope, be patient, and keep praying. God knows deeply and intimately what you are going through. Move from a place of self-pity to a place where your heart is open to God’s lessons in that trial. This decision alone with cause you to overflow with hope and joy. God is always working. Cooperating with His work in your life will give you peace while He carries you to His great deliverance.

I waited patiently for the Lord,
and He turned to me and heard my cry for help.
He brought me up from a desolate pit,
out of the muddy clay,
and set my feet on a rock,
making my steps secure.
He put a new song in my mouth,
a hymn of praise to our God.
Many will see and fear
and put their trust in the Lord.

Psalm 40:1-3
