Shoot Down Power

For God has not given us a spirit of fearfulness, but one of power, love, and sound judgment.

2 Timothy 1:7

Over the Christmas and New Year’s break, I read a wonderful book called Heaven is for Real by Todd Burpo. It’s the testimony of a family who experienced a beautiful gift from God after their little boy almost died. This little boy, named Colton, got to experience heaven, and over the course of a few years, told his parents what he experienced.

Many things struck me about Colton’s testimony, but one thing in particular stood out. One day, he told his mother and father that he saw power shoot down from the Holy Spirit when his dad talked at church (his dad is a pastor). I began to think about that concept. Power. Shooting down from the Holy Spirit. Then as I was reading my Bible, the word power appeared over and over again.

I pray that He may grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with power in the inner man through His Spirit. (Eph. 3:16)

Now to Him who is able to do above and beyond all that we ask or think according to the power that works in us. (Eph. 3:20)

And in view of this, we always pray for you that our God will consider you worthy of His calling, and will, by His power, fulfill every desire for goodness and the work of faith.  (2 Thes. 1:11)

Share in suffering for the gospel, relying on the power of God. (2 Tim. 1:8)

He gives strength to the weary and strengthens the powerless. (Isa. 40:29)

I love the simplicity of Colton’s words. “[The Holy Spirit] shoots down power for you.” It made so much sense to me! So now I pray, Jesus, please shoot down power for me to obey you today. Please shoot down power when I am tempted to go my own way. Please shoot down power so that I fulfill your work for me and in me today. Thank you for your great power, Jesus. Amen.
