Only Christ Can Unite (Weekend Devotional)

Make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose.

Philippians 2:2 NIV1984

The power of the Holy Spirit is the power to unite. In writing to the church in Philippi, Paul said his joy would be complete when the members were united in Christ. With the Holy Spirit, they had the power though Christ to be like-minded, to have the same love of Christ, and to be one in spirit and in purpose–an impossible task made possible with the miraculous work of Christ through the Holy Spirit.

As David began his reign as king, the twelve tribes of Israel were divided because of the war between David and Saul. The tribe of Benjamin, Saul’s tribe, was against David. However, when the Spirit of God took control, all that changed.

Other Benjaminites and men from Judah also went to David at the stronghold. David went out to meet them and said to them, “If you have come in peace to help me, my heart will be united with you, but if you have come to betray me to my enemies even though my hands have done no wrong, may the God of our ancestors look on it and judge.”

Then the Spirit took control of Amasai, chief of the Thirty, and he said:

We are yours, David,
we are with you, son of Jesse!
Peace, peace to you,
and peace to him who helps you,
for your God helps you.

So David received them and made them leaders of his troops.
-1 Chronicles 12:16-18

Do you have relationships in your life which are divided? Pray then for the Spirit of Christ to unite you. Truly, unity will only occur when people have been born-again. When the Holy Spirit comes to dwell in people, He gives them the mind of Christ, the love of Christ, and the purpose of Christ. Even in our fallen world of division and selfish ambition, the power of Christ is the power to unite. It is a miracle only Christ can do. Pray for it today among your marriage, your family, your children, your workplace, and your church. When we have this, we have joy.
