Not an Easy Road

Behold, we consider those blessed who remained steadfast.

James 5:11 ESV

The Christian life is not an easy road. Consider our prime example–Jesus. His life began with a “No Vacancy” sign. “And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn” (Luke 2:7 ESV). His life ended nailed to a cross where those He came to save spit and scoffed at Him. “And the people stood by, watching, but the rulers scoffed at him, saying, ‘He saved others; let him save himself, if he is the Christ of God, his Chosen One!'” (Luke 23:35 ESV). No friends, it is not an easy road with Jesus.

But here’s the question–Is life easy? With or without Jesus, life is hard. Sickness and disease don’t discriminate. Money cannot buy true peace within a human heart or heal broken relationships. Power and prestige don’t take away the dreadful feelings of pain and hurt in the middle of a dark night when one is all alone. The things of this world can never do for our souls what only Jesus can do for us.

No, it’s not an easy road with Jesus, but then again, it’s not an easy road–period. Would you rather walk the difficult path alone, or would you rather walk the difficult path with Jesus? I’ve done both, and I can tell you one thing–they don’t even compare. I would rather walk 1,000 difficult roads with Jesus than one difficult road without Him. Yes, it may be hard now, but Jesus promises to never leave us or forsake those who follow Him. He will be with us now, then take us home with Him for all eternity.

It is my prayer today that you surrender your life to Him and choose to walk the difficult road, knowing His presence will always bless you, no matter where He takes you.
