Have Faith in Every Situation

In every situation take the shield of faith, and with it you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.

Ephesians 6:16

God has helped me many times over to recognize my greatest area of weakness (sin)–unbelief. Like a lion crouching, waiting to get his claws on me, I open the door and let him in every time I begin to make assessments based on what is going on around me instead of on what God has revealed to me in His Word. Did God really say…? (Gen. 3:1). The doubt creeps in and begins to spin darkness and depression over my heart. I feel my joy slipping away. I’ve allowed myself to be swayed by the unbelief and the lies yet again.

The Lord said to Cain, “…sin is crouching at the door. It’s desire is for you, but you must rule over it” (Gen. 4:7). That word–desire–“suggests sin wishes to be as intimate with humanity as a woman is with her husband. The only way to avoid this is to be its master, not its companion” (HCSB Study Bible, 14). What a word picture! We cannot for a moment underestimate the effects sin has on our lives if we open the door to it.

The Word of God and prayer are our powerful weapons against the flaming arrows of unbelief and doubt. I have been writing Scripture on 3×5 cards for years, and that has always helped me. I decided I needed a little more space and typed up several verses, printed them out, and self-laminated them to carry around with me everywhere I go. I am going to recognize the arrows more quickly when they come in (goodness knows I’ve seen enough of them fly at me by now!), stop what I’m doing, read these Scriptures, and pray. And then I’m going to trust that God will take care of the arrows for me. He always has, and He always will. The crouching lion will not steal my joy today. I belong to the King!
