Full of Grace and Truth

Yahweh—Yahweh is a compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger and rich in faithful love and truth, maintaining faithful love to a thousand generations, forgiving wrongdoing, rebellion, and sin. But He will not leave the guilty unpunished, bringing the consequences of the fathers’ wrongdoing on the children and grandchildren to the third and fourth generation.

Exodus 34:6-7

We tend to read the parts of Scripture we want to hear (God is love) and ignore the parts we do not want to hear (God is a Righteous Judge). But the truth remains–God is both faithful love and truth. He forgives sin and wrongdoing abundantly, but He also judges wrongdoing perfectly. There are consequences for unbelief and disobedience to God’s Word. We cannot take one iota of Scripture lightly. God is serious about what He says, and He will do it–we can be sure of that.

At the conclusion of the book of Ecclesiastes, the writer summed it all up: When all has been heard, the conclusion of the matter is: fear God and keep His commands, because this is for all humanity. For God will bring every act to judgment, including every hidden thing, whether good or evil (Ecc. 12:13-14). God wants us to know He is serious about obedience to Him. He is merciful, but His mercy lasts only so long. When we are given warning after warning to turn away from sin and turn back to God, we need to heed that. We cannot take God’s grace for granted.

If you are feeling uncomfortable reading this now, it may be a sign that God is reaching out to you. Feelings of discomfort over the truth is God’s way of speaking to us about our sin. It is His mercy upon us. Take the time today to spend time with God and ask Him to speak with you specifically. What is the next step you need to take with Him? He honors those abundantly who choose to turn away from their sin and turn to Him instead. Abundantly.
