Drawing Near to God Through Cleansing of Our Sins

Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Be wretched and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.

James 4:8-10 ESV

The way to deep intimacy with God is through humbling ourselves before Him. Though painful at first, God reflects the depth of His mercy when He shows us the truth about our sinful nature. When we see ourselves next to a holy and perfect God, we should immediately humble ourselves and “repent in dust and ashes (Job 42:6). When we do this, God promises to lift us up to Him. When we feel the presence of God shining upon us, filling our hearts with His love and peace, we are thankful He cleansed our hearts from wickedness so He could make room for His presence.

Take time with the Lord today to humble yourself before Him, asking Him to cleanse you of your sins. Don’t be afraid to come to Him for healing and restoration. He is not a father out to get you or to belittle you–He is a Father who wants to set you free so that you can walk in peace and joy. He is longing for you to come to Him. This is a great habit to get into every day. Continual cleansing of our sinful nature will only serve to unite us deeper with Jesus. Even as followers of Jesus Christ, redeemed by His blood, we are still in need of His continual washing of our iniquities on a daily basis. This helps us to grow in our relationship with Him, which is what Jesus Christ is all about and why He came–to have a personal relationship with His creation. A sinner who hangs onto her sins cannot stand in the presence of God. But a humble person who acknowledges her sins before a holy God will not only receive cleansing, she will also receive healing and joy!
