Mind at Peace (Weekend Devotional)

You will keep him in perfect peace,
Whose mind is stayed on You,
Because he trusts in You.

Isaiah 26:3 NKJV

I have realized the truth of this Scripture in profound ways recently. When I am worrying about something, or wondering how something difficult can ever be worked out, my mind is in turmoil. I feel anxiety in my spirit, and I’m sure my body manifests it too with a higher pulse rate. It is not a fun way to live. Unfortunately, I think many Christians spend most of their days in this state.

But we don’t have to. God has given us His peace through the Holy Spirit, dwelling in us. The Holy Spirit has the power to keep our minds in perfect peace. But how do we get there? It begins in the mind always. Instead of worrying, recite a memory verse in your head. Or say it out loud. Instead of daydreaming about how a difficult situation can get worked out, sing along with praise music. Instead of watching TV or reading the newspaper all the time, read the Bible. Instead of chatting with a friend over a problem, go to God in prayer first. We really have a lot more power over our thoughts than we think. We can choose to spend our thoughts and energy in many godly ways instead of worry.

Keep your mind on Jesus. Trust in Him. Make the conscious choice to think about Him instead of your problems. Over time, you will be amazed at how much peace you have. That’s God’s promise to us.
