Why We Should Pray for Our Government Authorities

“First of all, then, I urge that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for everyone, for kings and all those who are in authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity. This is good, and it pleases God our Savior…”

1 Timothy 2:1-3

Scripture commands us to be in prayer for those whom God has selected for public office. We are to be praying for all government authorities under all circumstances. We should pray that the Word of God is upheld in their decisions and that God is being honored throughout all institutions of government.

I confess that I was not one who was involved in keeping this command. But over the past couple of years, God has changed my heart to become involved through prayer and seeking Him for the direction of our country. As a follower of Jesus Christ, I do not get to pick and choose which commands in Scripture I get to follow. I am commanded to follow Jesus in all things He commands, and the blessings of my obedience will come. “If anyone serves Me, he must follow Me. Where I am, there My servant also will be. If anyone serves Me, the Father will honor him” (John 12:26).

Are you struggling to obey God in this area? Confess your struggles to Him. Allow Him to open your heart and mind to some of the reasons why you are struggling. Then obey His command to pray and seek His help for our governing authorities. In my experience, obedience to God in any area we are having difficulty in will always bring joy and peace where we were missing it.
