Why We Should Exercise Our Right to Vote

Everyone must submit to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except from God, and those that exist are instituted by God.

Romans 13:1

As a citizen of the United States of America, it is our God-given responsibility to vote in all elections. When we vote, we should ask God who He would have us vote for. Seeking God through prayer and the truth of His Word will give us insight into the candidates He would have us support.

It is impossible to understand the truth of the matter during elections by just watching what the media reports. Each one of us must spend time with the Lord, asking Him to guide us in our choices. As followers of Jesus Christ, “each of us will give an account of himself to God” (Rom. 14:12). God will ask us whether we sought Him in making a decision about candidates. He will ask whether we allowed the Holy Spirit to lead our voting choices or whether we allowed the media and our own opinions to lead our choices. With a little over two weeks left, go to the Lord and spend time with Him over this matter if you haven’t already. Ask Him–God, who would you have me select from the candidates running for office? Then place your thoughts and responses into God’s hands. He will open up your heart to the truth of the matter through prayer and the Bible. Then trust Him–no matter what the outcome determined by God, you can have peace knowing you obeyed His direction for your voting choices.
