Beauty from Ashes

To give them a crown of beauty instead of ashes.

Isaiah 61:3

The Holy Spirit has brought this verse to my mind a lot lately. It speaks of a reversal of events–taking something of despair and turning it into amazing joy. I looked up the definitions of “crown” and “ashes” from the Holman Illustrated Bible Dictionary (MyStudyBible.com). What I found was a remarkable word picture.

Ashes – “Often associated with sacrifices, mourning, and fasting. Grief, humiliation, and repentance were expressed by placing ashes on the head or by sitting in ashes. Dirt, sackcloth, fasting, the tearing of clothing, and ashes visibly demonstrated the person’s emotions.”

Crown – “Special headdress worn by royalty and other persons of high merit and honor.”

God literally takes off the ashes of our broken lives and replaces them with crowns of beauty. Instead of wearing our heartache like gray ashes, He reverses our circumstances in such a way that our broken lives become crowns of gold and sparkling jewels. And He does it all for His glory.

When Susan Boyle went on stage to audition, the judges and audience didn’t think much of her. They looked at her outward appearance and made assumptions based only on what they could see. When she began to sing, everything changed. What was outwardly viewed as ashes became a crown of beauty.

Only God can take the ashes of your circumstances and turn them into a crown of beauty. Praise Him today, even in the ashes. The crown of beauty will come in God’s time. And it will be nothing short of breathtaking.
