Mistakes (Weekend Devotional)

But while the son was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion. He ran, threw his arms around his neck, and kissed him.
Luke 15:20

We make mistakes every day. But do we understand we do not have to be trapped by our mistakes? Do we understand the overflowing grace and forgiveness God has for His children? I just made a mistake recently by disobeying God’s command of keeping the Sabbath a day of rest and scheduled an unnecessary family activity for eight weeks on Sunday afternoons. I could hear the prompting of the Holy Spirit cautioning me not to move forward as I was scheduling the activity, but I chose to ignore Him. I woke up the next morning with anxiety and unrest in my heart. But the moment I told God I was sorry, told my family I had made this mistake and that we needed to correct it, I was restored to peace and joy with my Father again.

It’s a lie to believe if we make a mistake we have no choice but to live with it. In fact, at any moment, we can turn things around and obey the Lord. At any moment. God is patiently waiting for us as the father waited for his lost son to return. At moments of disobedience, or even seasons of disobedience, we are that lost son. God is the father looking down the road, anticipating His child’s return. And when we return to Him, He throws His arms around us and we get to experience all the joy and peace of being in our Father’s will again.
