Jesus Prepares a Place for Us

In My Father’s house are many dwelling places; if not, I would have told you. I am going away to prepare a place for you.

John 14:2

When Jesus spoke this to His disciples, He was about to go to the cross and pay the penalty for the sins of humanity. His disciples didn’t fully understand His need to leave them. They were worried. They were fretting. They didn’t want to lose their beloved teacher, friend and leader. They didn’t know what would happen to them once He was gone.

But Jesus had a plan. They didn’t need to worry. He had it all worked out. His need to leave opened the opportunity for them to receive the greatest gift He could possibly give them–His presence forever dwelling within them. His physical absence was only temporary. His spiritual presence would be with them for the rest of their lives. It would carry them through good days and bad days. Then, at the end of their earthly lives, they would go to heaven to be in the dwelling place He Himself had prepared for each of them.

This promise was not just for the 11 disciples still with Him at that Passover supper the last night of Jesus’ life on earth (Judas had left to betray Him by this point). This promise is for every believer who would come after the 11. This promise is for you and me.

Jesus is not only with us through the Holy Spirit, He is also in heaven preparing a place for us when we get there. Is there no greater encouragement than knowing the Son of God is preparing a place in heaven for you? He is preparing you each day of your life to live forever in your true home. As a follower of Christ, your time here is temporary. But your home with Jesus will be forever.

If you are struggling today, keep your eyes on Jesus and on eternity. This dwelling place is fleeting. Your struggles will come to an end. But your perfect dwelling place will last forever.
