Called from Darkness to Light

So that you may proclaim the praises of the One who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.

1 Peter 2:9

The Bible uses a lot of imagery to describe our state before we are in Christ and after we come to know Him. One of the most powerful and prominent word pictures is that of darkness and light. We all walked in darkness before knowing Christ. Picture yourself walking around your dark bedroom at night trying to find the light switch. Do you bump into the bedpost? Do you stub your toe on the book lying on the floor? Do you bang your knee into your dresser? You can’t see, so these things keep happening. You may get frustrated and blame the book you left there. But once you flip the light switch and light floods the room, you don’t get hurt so easily. You can see the bedpost, the book, and the dresser to avoid the bruises.

Receiving the Holy Spirit is just like flipping the light switch on in the room. Your eyes are opened to the truth of the circumstances around you. You have been given the wisdom to make decisions, the discernment to know truth from lies, and the guidance to help you walk on the right path. With the privilege of coming to God in prayer knowing He hears you and the promise He will speak to you through the Holy Spirit, you can continue walking in the marvelous light of Christ. Don’t believe for a moment that an authentic follower of Christ is back in the darkness. She is in the Light always. Remain in the Light and allow that Light to carry you through the rest of this day, this week, this month. Then proclaim the praises of the One who called you into His Marvelous Light–Jesus Christ.
